He came from Dedham, Co.Essex to Massachusetts Bay in 1635 (based on his election as Watertown selectman on Nov 25,1635). From Watertown, he removed to Wethersfield by 1638, and, finally, New Haven in 1640. He died between 29 October 1640 and May 1641 (the date of the inventory of his estate).

He married, about 1598, Grace Makin. She was a daughter of Tobias Makin and Katherine (Westbrome) Makin of Fingringhoe, Co.Essex. She was living on June 14,1643 (when she was mentioned in the will of her husband's uncle Samuel Sherman. She was mentioned earlier, on Feb 7,1620/1, in the will of her brother Tobias Makin Jr.). NOTE: Edmund's wife was not Joan Makin as postulated in a 1920 Sherman Genealogy. (NEHGR Vol 168 [Jan 2014], p.18, and Great Migration, Volume VI (2009), pp.282ff.)

In her will of 2 September 1625, "Ann Anger," sister of this Edmund Sherman, and wife of John Anger, included bequests to "my brothers Edmund Sherman & Richard Sherman" and to "Ann Sherman and Jone Sherman daughters of my brother Edmund."

In his will of 14 June 1643, "Samuel Sherman of Dedham in the County of Essex, clothier, brother of this Edmund Sherman, included bequests to "my loving sister Sherman, Edmond's widow twenty shillings, and to her daughters Grace and Ester Ward and to her youngest daughter to either of them twenty shillings." This "youngest daughter," otherwise undocumented, would probably have been born in that period beginning in late 1620 when there is a large gap in the record of baptisms in Dedham, Essex.

Pope thought that the Edmund Sherman who created the Watertown records was the son of this immigrant, and Savage wasn't sure. The crucial reason for believing that the Watertown man was the father rather than the son may be found in the 1637 grants of the Beaverbrook Plowland and Remote Meadow lots. In each case Edmund Sherman received six acres, which should represent a household of six. The son Edmund was not known to have been married at this time and should not have had six persons in his household. The older Edmund, however, had with him his wife and his four younger children: John, Samuel, Grace and the (unnamed) youngest daughter. (Grace probably married John Livermore very close to the date of the Remote Meadows grant.) There is no record to show that the younger Edmund Sherman was ever in New England. The early Watertown records of landholding and officeholding pertain to the father. Later New England records, which certainly pertain to the son, all place him in England, in 1640, 1648 and 1663, and the younger Edmund Sherman died in Dedham, Co.Essex between Apr 11,1673 and May 28,1673.

in 1634 he emigrated to New England. Settled in Roxbury, Mass. In the Anne Hutchinson trouble in Boston he took the popular side, but as Gov. Winthrop finally prevailed, he with others found it convenient to emigrate to Rhode Island. In Providence they met Roger Williams who advised them to purchase the island of Aquetnet, now Rhode Island, of the Indians. The purchase was completed March 24, 1638. On July 1, 1639, they established a regular government, with Wm. Coddington, Governor, and Phillip Sherman, Secretary.
After this he often held office in the Colony, and in critical periods. He was a man of intellignece, wealth, and influence, and frequently consulted by those in authority. The early record prepared by him still remains in Portsmouth, and show him to have been a neat and skillful penman, as well as an educated man. After he emigrated to Rhode Island he left the Congregational Church, and united with the Society of Friends. Tradition affirms he was a devout as well as a determined man.

In his will, dated 31 July 1681 and proved 22 March 1686/7, “Philip Shearman, yeoman, age seventy-one years, of the Town of Portsmouth,” bequeathed to “Sarah my loving wife the use and her dwelling in the first room at the west end of my now dwelling…”, “my son, Samuel my sole executor” and to provide “my loving wife with food and raiment and all necessaries whatsoever during her natural life and at her decease decently to bury her”, to “Sarah my wife ten good ewe sheep”, to Eber my eldest son that which I have already given him, ten acres of land in the bounds of Portsmouth…. At a place called Briggs swamp…and all my horse flesh in the Narragansett country excepting one mare, the second best, such excepted mare , I give to Thomas Mumford and Peleg Mumford my grandchildren”, to “my son Peleg five ewe sheep”, to “my son Edmund a quarter share of meadow and a sixteenth part of a share of upland lying in Ponagansett within the township of Dartsmouth

John was a student in Immanuel College, Cambridge, England, but failed to graduate, owing to his puritanic views. He came to America in 1633: remained a short time in Watertown, Mass., whence he removed in 1636 to Wethersfield, Connecticuyt, where he was a magistrate. In 1640 he settled in Milford, Connecticut, where he was admitted to the church Nov 20, 1640; was again chosen magistrate of the colony May 27, 1641. He was dismissed from Milford church Nov. 8 1647, and about the same time became pastor of the church in Watertown, Massachusetts, where he continued until his death. He is said to have been one of the most learned men of his day, and an able and eloquent preacher. He married 1st Abigail, by whom he had six children; He married 2nd, Mary Launce, a great-granddaughter of Thomace Darcy, Earl of Rivers by whom he had twenty children. (Cotton Mather says he had twenty-six children, but it is probable several died in infancy, since there is record of only twelve.

!NOTE: Samuel Sherman came to Boston from England in June of 1634 when he was about 14 years of age. He went with father to Watertown, Massachusetts, and remained there a couple of years. He came to Wethersfield, Connecticut probably in 1636 for the following May he was one of the committee, who before the General Court was organized, which declared war against the Pequot Indians, he being then but 19 years of age. He married, probably at Wethersfield, Sarah, daughter of Mathew Mitchell, and sister of the Rev. Jonathan Mitchell, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, probably in the year 1640. He then to moved to Stamford, and finally settled in Stratford, now Bridgeport, Connecticut, before 1656. He was an Assistant or Member of the General Court in 1662, 1663, and 1664, and in 1665 he was appointed one of a committee of sixto watch and guard the coast, as a war committee, if the Dutch fleet should make its appearance, as expected, from Stratford to Rye. It is probably for his services in the General Court that he received from the General Court in October, 1664, 250 acres of land, which were finally located in Stratford, nearly opposite Derby Landing. He became possessed of a large quantity of land in Stratford, all of which nearly, he gave to his children before his decease, and he removed from Stratford village to the home of one of his sons on the Toilsome road near the Second Stratfield meetinghouse. In a writinf dated Nov. 9, 1685, he says, "I Samuel Sherman, Senr., now of Fairfield" showing that he was then living on the west side of the Toilsome road in the town of Fairfield. He died at that place, according to his grave-stone inscription, a facsimile of which is here given.

Biography
Hon. Samuel Sherman came from Dedham with his father Edmund, who died at New Haven, Conn., 1641.[citation needed]
HON. SAMUEL SHERMAN was baptized at Dedham, Essex, England on July 12, 1618. (Reg. 50, p. 416.)[1] He migrated with his parents, Edmund and Grace (Makin) Sherman,[1] and several siblings in 1635[1] when he was about 17 years old.[1]His brother, Rev. John Sherman had arrived in 1634.[1]Other brothers Edmund and Richard remained in England, sister Joan may have married Henry Wright of Dedham, Mass., and sister Hester married in England to Andrew Ward and they came to New England in 1633. Another sister Grace married John Livermore.[1]

Samuel was briefly at Boston, [citation needed] Watertown, Massachusetts, went from there about 1636, to Wethersfield.[1] Afterwards at Stamford until about 1650, then Stratford, and finally in 1685 to the area in Stratfield which was in Fairfield, Connecticut.[1]

In about 1640[1] at Wethersfield,[1] Samuel married Sarah Mitchell[1] (daughter of Matthew and Sarah (Butterfield)Mitchell and sister of Jonathan Mitchell, of Cambridge, a Fellow of Harvard College).[1]She was bap. at South Owram, Halifax, Yorkshire, England, Oct. 14, 1621[1] and came to New England with her parents, Matthew and Susan (Wood) Butterfield) Mitchell[1] and six siblings[1] on the James,[1] landing on August 17, 1635[1] and settling in Charlestown.[1]Sarah's maternal uncle was Edmund Wood.[1]Her sister Hannah married Robert Coe.[1]

He was a leading man in New Haven Colony, a conspicuous member of the Church and an Assistant from 1662 to 1667.[1] In 1637 he was on a Wethersfield committee that declared war on the Pequots;[1]and fought in the Pequot campaign in 1637.[1]He was deputy from Stratford to Connecticut Legislature, October 1660;[1] one of the purchasers of land from the natives for the parish of Stratfield in 1661;[1]An assistant to Connecticut Colony, October 1662, 1663-1667. [1]He was elected magistrate of the new Connecticut Colony in January 1664/5.[1] In 1665 on committee to assist in putting the colony in a posture of defense against the enemy (the Dutch) from Stratford to Rye.[1]He was on a list of Freemen at Stratford on October 7, 1669; and served on a committee appointed to assign seats in the new meeting house.[1]He served as commissioner for Stratford 1671-1675, for Stratford and Woodbury 1676-1679; for Stratford 1680-1684, and for Fairfield 1685-1688.[1]He placed his signature on the articles of agreement for the settlement of Woodbury in 1672 but probably did not move there.[1]In September 1692 he was one of the grand jurors who indicted Mercy Disborough on charges of witchcraft.[1]

Samuel was described as a "large land owner" and he was a community leader. In ancient deeds he is referred to the "Worshipful Mr. Sherman."

He was the father of Captain and Judge John Sherman, of Woodbury, Conn., who was speaker of the Connecticut General Assembly, Assistant and Judge of Probate and Judge of the County Court. Their descendants included General William Tecumseh Sherman and United States Senator and Secretary of State, John Sherman.[2]

Sarah died after April 15, 1665 at the birth of their last child. Samuel died at Fairfield, Connecticut on Apr. 5, 1700.

Sept. 10, 1700, agreement between his surviving children and heirs to divide his estate, Matthew and Edmund then dead. Children:

David Sherman, b. at Stratford, Apr. 15, 1665 and died at Stratfield on January 1, 1753 at 88 years old. m. Mercy Wheeler about 1690, the daughter of Isaac Wheeler. Mercy was born about 1670 and died in Stratfield on August 19, 1745. [1]

Sarah (daughter of Mathew MITCHELL and Susan Wood) was born on 14 Oct 1621 in South Owram, Halifax, England; was christened on 14 Oct 1621 in Dedham, Essex, England; died on 15 Apr 1665 in Hartford County, Connecticut, USA. In 1648 was Town Clerk, and often afterwards. Was a selectman and surveyor often between 1667 and 1680. Representative 1651, 1653, 1663, 1682. Ensign, 1654. Stewart of Harvard College, 1662. Captain of town militia, and often called to manage town affairs.
