!NOTE Joel Wood was born sixteen miles from Nashville, Tenn. When he was 6 years of age he and his two brothers, accompanied by their uncle, William Gose (sic), walked the entire distance tetween Nashville and Carlton, Mo. near which he spent his boyhood. In 1849, in the company with Edmond Clark, a neighbor residing in Richmond county, MO., he joined a wagon train, led by Capt. William Gray, heading west. He arrived in California 16 Nov 1849 via Carson and Lassen. Resided at Bidwell Bar, Rich Bar (Yuba Co.) Marysville, Big Meadow, Lambs Valley, and Capay Valley (Yolo Co). He operated a Ferry across the Feather River and ran a trading post and general store in Bidwell Bar, Butte Co. in late 1849 until May 1850. He returned to Missouri and then next year came back to Marysville. He then opened a store and butcher shop at Rich Bar on the Middle Fork of the Yuba River. He tried raising cattle near Marysville. In 1852 He ran a trading post at Big Meadows on the Humboldt River. He lived for a time in Lake County but left because of the proximity of the Indians. In 1854 he moved to Yolo County and settled in Capay Valley, giving the valley the name of Capay. He operated a store and blacksmith shop in the area named Dogtown (later called Cadanasa). in 1880 the "Yolo Mail", the county newspaper wrote a spicy story of the a860's about Dogtown brawls and wild times. Dogtown became a way station for everyone going to Berryessa. It was the pioneer community for the whole valley.
He later farmed and raised cattle and sheep. He was a Constable and made the arrest of 2 desperados, James Marble and L. Glasscock. He was the second of the first 5 settlers in Capay Valley. He could read and write whereas most Pioneers could not. The Wood family originally was from England and emigrated from Virginia to Tenn. (This information came from an article in the "Woodland Democrat" !SOURCE family bible of Myrtle White (her first husband was a brother to Ken Bowles) information from Marjorie Bell, South Land Park, Sacramento, CA. She is the gr. gr. grandaughter of Joel Wood. There is also information in the CA state library files in Sacramento.
He lived in Cadanasa 64 years before his death. He died of old age. Book 2 death records.

Dear Marilyn,
I had a few minutes to go over some of the family history on the Parker Press
website. One of the questions was how Mary Wood and Marcellus Nurse met. I
will quote from a letter my grandmother wrote to me years ago after she took me
to the site of Joel and Emerine's home, and to the site of her parents' ranch in
the Capay Valley.
"Joel from Tennessee, Emerine from Kentucky, crossed the plains in 1840's.
Joel went up on the Feather River near Oroville Ca. during the gold strike,
settled at Rich Bar with a few other pioneers, made camp. Joel struck it rich
by mining (on Feather River) came to the Capay Valley, Yolo Co. bought with a
$20 gold piece acres and acres of land which sold at that time (1850's) 25 cents
to 50 cents per acre. And he had lots of the gold pieces. Married Emerine and
had eleven children, and as each married he gave them a ranch, which at that
time was called a short quarter (140 acres). Your great grandmother Mary got a
beautiful ranch (almond, fruit, etc.) nice home--eight children, one passed away
at the early age of eight or nine (Guy Frank). Made money and in those days it
was good--(not so today). Joel Wood had a store, hotel and your great
grandfather Marcellus A. Nurse came out from Portsmouth, Ohio, with two other
young surveyors, started this side of S.F. in a place called Elmira and surveyed
for a railroad to go up through the Capay Valley. When they got as far as
Joel's line they stayed at the hotel and that is where he met your great
grandmother Mary, courted her, after finishing the line, left, and came back and
really fell in love and they married in 1872."
This was written as kind of a long handwritten note, with the sentences running
together, and punctuation left out, but it still holds together. I have also
heard, and can't remember when or where, that Marcellus went to a box lunch
social in the Capay Valley where he saw Mary the first time, and was taken with
her, and bought her box lunch. I don't know if this is true but I have heard
that story for a long time. Grandma also told me that Joel and Emerine's home
was a wonderful place for the whole family, days filled with good visits and
good food. She said that Marcellus was a good but very strict father. Once
as a little girl she followed him out into the orchard, she was so excited that
he was home. I think he commuted by train to Sacramento where he worked. She
said he switched her legs with a switch all the way back to the house because
she had disobeyed him. That may be why she loved Rose so much, as he was the
oldest, and she was the youngest, and he was so sweet and loving to her. She
said that Marcellus brought home musical instruments for the children and they
played them together in the evenings. She played the piano and the accordion by
ear, but she could also read music. Once as a little girl she was asked to play
the organ or piano during church, as the pianist was sick that day. She went to
the front of the church, sat down, and played "There'll be a Hot Time in the Old
Town Tonight". No one scolded her. She rode a horse to school and one time
fell into the creek and was saved by clinging to what she called a cockle burr
branch. Another story I love is that when it became necessary to move to
Sacramento to be close to Marcellus' work, Mary said she would only go if she
could take her milk cow, and she did. Grandma sometimes accompanied her father
to the state capital and one day she visited the treasurer's office. They told
her that she could have any sack of gold she could carry out of the office, but
of course the sacks were so heavy she couldn't budge them. I love these stories
and tell them to my daughter and granddaughters. Nick and I took our daughter
back east years ago, and with my cousin Merrilyn Marquering Powell, spent the
day at the home of Rebecca Nurse. We walked from the home out to the memorial
site, which is an approximation of her burial site or grave. Grandma and
Grandpa visited her home many years before that. It felt necessary to honor
Rebecca in some way, and visiting helped us feel that we did.

Albert Rose Nurse and Carolyn Mae Clark met and fell in love in 1904. He was assigned to work on the Tisdale Wier in Colusa where Carrie lived and worked as a dress maker. He was grieving over the death of his first wife, Minnie Duncan and their two little children. Carrie, according to their friends, brought out the best in Albert Rose and made him happy and positive. They married in 1905. They were a happy, loving, supporting couple. The first 4 children were born in Sacramento, Elwood in 1906, Ashley in 1908, Lucille in 1910, and Elinor in 1912. Rose was a conductor on the streetcar for the Sac'to Gas, Electric, and Railway Co. In January 1913 the family moved to the ranch in Cadenasso, where Rose grew up and three more children were born, Forrest in 1913, Norma in 1914, and Audrey in 1917. Rose and Carolyn Nurse lived and raised their children on the 160 acre ranch inherited from his mother. They raised cattle, pigs, turkeys, chickens, and grain. There were also almonds, walnuts, and peaches. The ranch at Cadenasso included the house where Rose was born and was near the Cadanesso school.

When their children were still quite young, Rose Nurse lost his eyesight due to eyelashes that grew back into his eyes, irritating them. He could no longer work and earn a living for the family. The girls would take tweezers and pull out his eyelashes. He would often be heard whistling or singing. He was a gentle man and loved all the babies and little ones. He would often say, "Isn't that the cutest baby you have ever seen." His children took turns reading to him, and providing for his needs.

They were poor financially, but a happy, loving cooperative family. Carrie played the piano, mainly hymns. Rose played the violin and could chord and play with her by ear. The children would sing to the music. The children were never spanked. The parents were always supportive with positive guidance. If the children needed disciplining, they were sent to the bedroom and told not to come out until there was a smile on their face. If it was only half of a smile, they were sent back until the smile was full and real.
The land was reposessed by Roy Wyatt after a fire in 1938 burned down the house with Rose Nurse in it. Elinor Parker, their daughter, tells the story about the fire as follows: "She was on her way to stay with her parents. She stopped at the Monroe ranch to drop off something. Everett found her there and told her there was trouble at the ranch. He took her to the ranch. Someone stopped her at the gate and told her she couldn't go to the house because her dad was gone. Her mother was sittin there by the gate in a chair and said, 'I don't mean to be rebellious, but why did this have to happen to us?' Audrey and Elwood were still living at home at the time, but Elwood had gone on a date and Audrey had gone to Fort Bragg.. After the fire, Carrie, Audrey, and Elwood stayed at the Monroe ranch until after the funeral. They then rented a small house on Court Street in Woodland until after Audrey and Jim were married. Then Carrie lived with them until she moved to Alderson's Convelescent Hospital. Rose and Carrie had a $6000 balance owed on account in Wyatt's general store. Carrie had no income and no money to repay the balance owed, and neither did any of her children since it was during the great depression. So the land went to Roy Wyatt to satisfy the $6000 debt. The property was later sold for $69,000.

Aunt Molly Randle had a breast removed as a young woman, but then lived to be 95 years old. She lost 1 son, Junior, probably to pneumonia.. The lake in South side Park was named Junior Lake after him. Her husband, George, was state engineer and was well known. He had TB and was bed ridden for 30 years. Aunt Molly cared for him all those years.
Aunt Molly and three sisters often came up to Rose and Carrie's ranch. it was all such fun. There was lots of laughter and love. Aunt Molly had lots of money and wore fancy dresses.

Maurice Elmer Wood passed away unexpectedly Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at the age of 89.
He was a lifelong resident of the Capay Valley and was born on Oct. 19, 1920. He retired from the Yolo County Department of Public Works in 1983 after 32 years of service.
Maurice was a World War II veteran who served in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Army.
He was the last surviving grandson of Capay Valley pioneers Joel and Emarine Wood, and the son of Elmer and Margaret Wood.
Maurice is survived by his wife of 70 years, Peggy; son, Philip Wood and his wife Linda; and daughter, Carol Grein; grandchildren, Joel Grein and his wife Molly, Glori Gaffen, Darin Grien, Philip Jr., and John and his wife Megan. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Amanda and Aliece Grein, and Shelby and Brandon Wood. Maurice was preceded in death by a son, Fulton, in 1957; and a brother, Paul of Bakersfield.
Graveside services are scheduled at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at the Capay Cemetery, 24727 County Road 22 in Esparto. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made directly to the Esparto Fire Department, PO Box 366, 16960 Yolo Ave., Esparto, 95627; or to an organization of the donors' choice.

When Elwood and Grace were married they lived at 651 Third Street, Woodland. Elwood was working at the Hickey and Able garage in Woodland. Grace was a nurse at the Woodland clinic hospital.
Elwood owned a service station in Anchorage Alaska. His two girls grew up there. His wife moved to Oregon after his death. Carol lives in Sacramento. Jean lives in Portland, Oregon.

Jim and Lucille lived most of their lives on the Monroe/Duncan Ranch just North of Capay bridge. While working and managing this ranch, they raised their three children. Jim and Lucille moved to Esparto when the ranch sold. Nancy and Jim Grasty (he was a Pharmacist) live in Sacramento, Martha and Ray Donnenworth (he was a teacher) live in Portola, California, Jim and Barbara Monroe raised their children in Woodland and moved to Esparto next to Jim's parents. Jim III retired from PG&E.

!NOTE: Elinor remembers that dad would put the turkeys and chickens to roost at night. The children got up a 5 a.m. to turn them loose and then would chase them at night to put them back to roost. . There was a small 4'by 4' john in a shed with a small tub on the side for bathing. At about age 10 to 12 she drove the wagon up the valley to the old adobe. Elinor worked her 1st year out of high school at Wyatt's store; at Woolworth's in Woodland for the next two Christmas seasons (staying at Jim and Lucille Monroe's while working there.
When Diane was young, Elinor drove the school bus with Diane riding with her. Elinor was active in almond, peach and walnut farming along with her husband. She was a pink lady volunteer at the hospital in Woodland for many years. Elinor was also a member of Easter Star for over 50 years.

Elinor rode the school bus, "the Rumsey Express", that made the run up the valley to the high school.
