Obituary (Eureka Mirror) 26 Mar 1937
Richard (Dick) Smith, an old time resident of this district, passed away Sunday night at the Libby hospital where he had been taken for treatment.
Mr. Smith was one of the outstanding characters in this neighborhood and spent most of time fighting conditions which he believed to be wrong. Many stories are told of his early day battles with the lumber and public officials.
Funeral services were held yesterday morning from Gumpfs Funeral home with Rev Fred A Datton of the full Gospel Church officiating.

Richard Smith was born about 1860 in Canada. He was listed in the Michigan 1894 census as a carpenter. It is said that in Montana he was a bricklayer, then a ditch tender of the irrigation ditch and that little by little he lost most of his land through lawsuits he initiated. It is also said that he was ornery, but Bertha remembers him as kind to her. After Libby died and Dick got old, he moved to town with one of their old neighbors and some one took what they wanted out of the house and it was burned to the ground. So nothing was left." "When Dick was buried, I was surprised as he was a real good looking man. He always wore a mustache and the undertaker shaved it off. The reason he wore a mustache, he had a big birth mark on his upper lip. And he was so clean." Richard Smith died in Eureka, Montana.
