Robert was the manager and the largest owner of the Palisade Mines, sutuated in King's Canyon about three miles above Calistoga. The claims were originally located in 1876, but active operations were not begun until 1883. The ore was quartz containing ruby silver, and sulphurets. He also owned four claims to the southeast of these claims. He began mining in the Washoe district, and from that time followed mining, assaying, etc., as his business. At one time he was manager of the celebrated Tajo mine in Sinaloa, Mexico, and superintendent of other mines. He was well liked.

THE NEWABK DAtLY ADVOCATE; MONDAY. OCTOBER 7 1895 page 5
Obituary
Mrs. Emeline Parker.
The beloved wife of Mr. John Parker, of No. 72 Western avenue, died most unexpectedly, being found by her aged companion in the bed Sabbath morning at 5 o'clock. Heart failure is believed to be the immediate cause of her death She had not been confined to her bed, although in poor health, for months past. With her home set in perfect order she lay down to rest and ere the morning dawned she "was not, for God took her."
The record of this woman's life is written deeply upon the hearts of those who knew her, and loved her for her estimable traits of character. So skillful and efficient in the sickroom where she served so many in their hours of watching and anxiety. Ever so quiet and gentle, yet she inspired a confidence that was rare, and all hearts intuitively trusted her.
Mrs. Parker was aged 62 years. She leaves an aged husband and five children to mourn their loss. Three of the children reside here, one daughter, Mrs. Anna Maxham, in Jamestown, N. Y., and one son William, in California. One sister here, Mrs. C. H. Snyder and a host of friends feel greatly bereft because of her death.
Mrs. Parker has been a member of the M. E. church for years. The funeral services will be held from the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. T. Abbott, No. 80 Western avenue, Tuesday at 2 p m., standard time, conducted by Rev. C. C. Eison and Rev. Magee.

The Life of Lyle Gene Parker
September 2, 1938 - July 22, 2017

As many of you know, Lyle had several health issues. After a recent hospital stay, we made the decision to bring him home. We surrounded him with our love until his peaceful passing the morning of July 22, 2017.
Tracing his roots back to the settlers of Yolo County, Lyle was a lifelong resident of Davis born to Mary Mack and Lyle Parker Sr. on September 2, 1938, and as a person of immense integrity, fortitude of character, and patriotism, he had the unique experience of serving his country on the USS Hancock as an Aviation Ordnanceman in the Navy during the late 1950s and early 1960s, and he demonstrated leadership, professional competence, and dedication to excellence during his six years of service and achieved the rank of Petty Officer Second Class.
Displaying a special care and concern for the safety and well-being of his community, Lyle unselfishly devoted his career to the duties of fire prevention and suppression, and after joining the University of California, Davis, Fire Department, he progressed through the ranks from firefighter to Captain before retiring in 1988 after nearly 30 years of public service. Respected and admired by his colleagues, he was known throughout the Department as a moral compass, and he served as a role model for fellow firefighters, exemplifying the values of professionalism, integrity, trust, and commitment.
As a commercial pilot and flight instructor, Lyle was renowned for his superb ability to make good decisions and precise judgments, and he shared his talent and skill flying private charters and working with many agencies, including Cal Aggie Flying Farmers, Ducks Unlimited, the US Geological Society, UC Davis, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
Lyle and Sandy enjoyed nearly a half century of marriage, and he was immensely proud of his children, Gene and Cari, and grandchildren, Cash and Lauren, to whom he passed on his wry sense of humor, devotion to good deeds, and other values that have enabled them to succeed in our complex society and develop and sustain community spirit.
Lyle never hesitated to help whenever called upon, and because of his MacGyver-like abilities, he was known as the “Go to Guy,” who could fix anything. His family will hold dear to their hearts such memories as his love of Westerns, laughing till in tears while watching slapstick comedies with his favorite being The Pink Panther, his enjoyment of the outdoors and “puttering,” and his favorite candies being orange slices and red licorice. Some of the funny pet peeves he would razz the kids about are Gene’s scruffy goatee, the trendy holes in Cari’s jeans, and wearing hats at the dinner table. Something endearing to Sandy is that he never raised his voice to her except when she had the hiccups, and he would holler, “Stop hiccuping!”.
Remembered as a good man by many throughout the Davis community and beyond, Lyle exhibited all of the most treasured human qualities that are universally recognized as true indicators of a life of fulfillment and meaning exemplified by his calm demeanor, his focus on service, his effective blending of humility, intelligence, and common sense, and his loyalty and commitment to his family and friends, which caused those who knew him to be better for the experience.
Lyle’s family, which includes his wife, Sandy; his children, Gene and his wife Kathleen, and Cari and her husband Barry Johnston; his grandchildren, Cash Johnston and Lauren Parker; his mother-in-law, Sally Maness; and his brother-in-law, Steve Maness and his wife Jane Hawk, take comfort in the knowledge that he is now pal’n around with his good buddies that have passed before him.

Thank you all for being a part of his life,
Sandy, Gene, and Cari

Per Lyle’s wishes there will be no service.
PARKER, Lyle (I4741)

JOSEPH LEE EDINGTON.
A resident of Chiles valley, Joseph Lee Edington is the owner of three hundred and ninety-eight acres of land, recently purchased from James B, Edington, located about fourteen miles from St. Helena. This ranch is mostly all under cultivation and presents an appearance of care and attention seldom exceeded in this section. Two hundred acres are in grain and hay. Thirty-two in vineyard and the balance is pasture land, with the exception of a family orchard. There is plenty of wood on the place and some stock is kept ; there are six head of horses, seven head of cows and twenty-two head of calves, besides a number of hogs.
Mr. Edington was married in Napa in 1899 to Emma, daughter of Samuel Radelfinger, a well known resident of Napa, Cal., who was employed at the Vallejo navy yard until he died in October, 1911. Mrs. Edington is a native daughter and is a woman of much initiative. They have one child, Velma.:

HON. FRANK L. COOMBS.
Of the many progressive citizens of Napa county there is none better known than Frank L. Coombs, who, as the incumbent of various positions of trust and honor, has borne a distinguished part in state, national and international affairs. Not alone through his labors in the state assembly and the national halls of congress, but also through his representation of the United States in a foreign empire, his name is entitled to perpetuation in the annals of his country. He was born near Napa, on a ranch owned by his father, Nathan Coombs. December 27, 1853, and was educated in the local schools of the county. Later he entered the Columbia Law School of Washington, D. C., from which lie was graduated June 10. 1873, and during the same year he was admitted to the supreme court of Washington and the supreme court of California. Early in 1876 lie opened an office at Napa and at once took an active and leading position among the young attorneys of the town. In September, 1879, lie was elected district attorney of Napa county, on the Republican ticket, and re-elected in 1882. holding the office two terms. He was elected to represent Napa county in the legislature for the sessions of 1887. 1889. 1801 and 1897. In 1891 and 1807 he had the additional honor of being chosen speaker of the house. In 1802 President Harrison appointed him United States minister to Japan, where he represented our nation with tact and ability. Returning to the United States in 1893 he resumed his professional labors until 1899. when he was appointed United States attorney for the northern district of -California, which position he filled two years. In 1901 lie was elected to represent his district in congress. On the expiration of his term of office, in March, 1903, he resumed the practice of law in Napa and has so continued up to the present time. While in public life his name was associated with the principal events in public affairs. He always fought for reforms. While minister to Japan he secured action from the imperial government restraining the immigration of Japanese laborers to America, this being the initiative in this direction. While in congress it was largely through his work that the present Chinese restrictive measures were shaped. From him came the idea of prohibiting the Chinese from going to our new possessions and usurping the fields where the natives were to be shown the new roads to progress. The present policy of returning the insane and criminals to their own country was first formulated and suggested by him in the platform of the Republican party adopted in the state convention at Sacramento in 1900.
December 27, 1876. Mr. Coombs was united in marriage with Isabelle M. Roper, daughter of Foster Roper, of Boston, Mass., where she was born and reared and educated in the local schools, after which she attended Mount Holyoke Seminary, where her education was completed ; later she taught in the Boston public schools for a time. Of this union there are three children : Nathan F., the present district attorney of Napa county; Amy and Dorothy. The elder daughter, Amy, married Harry Dunlap, son of Sheriff D. A. Dunlap, in 1909. Fraternally Mr. Coombs is a member. of the Elks, the Odd Fellows and Eagles, and Native Sons of the Golden West, and in the latter order has been honored with the office of grand president..

COOMBS, Frank Leslie, a Representative from California; born in Napa, Napa County, Calif., December 27, 1853; attended the public schools in California; attended the Dorchester High School, Boston, Mass., and was graduated from the law department of Columbian (now George Washington) University, Washington, D.C., in 1875; was admitted to the bar in 1875 and commenced practice in Napa, Calif.; district attorney of Napa County, Calif., 1880-1885; member of the State assembly 1887-1889 and 1891-1897 and served as speaker in 1891 and again in 1897; on the death of John F. Swift was appointed United States Minister to Japan and served from June 1892 to August 1893; State librarian of California from April 1, 1898, to April 1, 1899; United States attorney for the northern district of California from April 1, 1899, to March 1, 1901; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1901-March 3, 1903); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1902; resumed the practice of law in Napa, Calif.; again a member of the State assembly 1921-1923 and 1925-1927; died in Napa, Calif., October 5, 1934; interment in Tulocay Cemetery.
