    Obituary
    Mrs. Emeline Parker.
The beloved wife of Mr. John Parker, of No. 72 Western avenue, died most unexpectedly, being found by her aged companion in the bed Sabbath morning at 5 o'clock. Heart failure is believed to be the immediate cause of her death She had not been confined to her bed, although in poor health, for months past. With her home set in perfect order she lay down to rest and ere the morning dawned she "was not, for God took her."
The record of this woman's life is written deeply upon the hearts of those who knew her, and loved her for her estimable traits of character. So skillful and efficient in the sickroom where she served so many in their hours of watching and anxiety. Ever so quiet and gentle, yet she inspired a confidence that was rare, and all hearts intuitively trusted her.
Mrs. Parker was aged 62 years. She leaves an aged husband and five children to mourn their loss. Three of the children reside here, one daughter, Mrs. Anna Maxham, in Jamestown, N. Y., and one son William, in California. One sister here, Mrs. C. H. Snyder and a host of friends feel greatly bereft because of her death.
Mrs. Parker has been a member of the M. E. church for years. The funeral services will be held from the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. T. Abbott, No. 80 Western avenue, Tuesday at 2 p m., standard time, conducted by Rev. C. C. Eison and Rev. Magee.

    The Official Beginning
The Town of Greece was incorporated in 1822. It was named after the country of Greece as a show of support for the Greek people who fought for their independence from Turkish rule. The name is also a tribute to this old-world nation – a symbol of intellectual and athletic excellence.

The Town of Greece was formed from the northern part of the town of Gates. In 1823, expansion of the Erie Canal resulted in the development of the southern part of town. Mason workers came from Europe to help build the canal and often settled here. Many of them built cobblestone houses, some of which still stand today.

Throughout the 1800s, the local economy centered on agriculture. Many of the beautiful farmhouses that were built during this period have been converted for commercial use. The Upton-Paine house, now Ridgemont Country Club, is one such home. The Greece Historical Society currently occupies the charming Larkin-Beattie-Howe house built in the 1850’s. (Gordon Howe, former Greece Supervisor, raised his family there.)
