The following is from, "Histoy of Yolo Co, California, Biographical Sketches, "John R. Parker" pg 768.:
"John was born at Newark, Licking County, Ohio and at the age of thirteen in 1851 he accompanied his parents from Ohio to Iowa settling in Poweshiek county, where he aided his father in the clearing of a government claim. In 1858-59 he made a trip to Pike's Peak at the time of the discovery of gold in Colorado. The trip peaked his interest in the west but was unsatisfactory from a moneyed standpoint and he returned to agriculture efforts on the home farm. He took up land for a homestead and spent many years in making improvements, bringing the soil under cultivation and securing ...whose broad fields of grain stretch from his barns in every direction,...While he gave his attention almost wholly to agriculture, there was a time in young manhood when he taught school and he continued in that profession for a very short period after his marriage, thus earning the money he needed for defraying indebtedness on his land.
Shortly after his arrival in Yolo county California in 1876, and his taking up of land, Mr. Parker went back into the hills near snow mountain, where he bought about three thousand acres of land. On this vast tract he herded a flock of three thousand head of sheep. The business proved profitable. He also owned an almond orchard of thirty acres in Hungry Hollow, but this he sold. He was active in general welfare and especially in the work of the Christian Church. He was a school trustee. He took no interest in public affairs. He was a citizen of sterling, rugged characteristics, of pronounced strength of character and unquestioned integrity in every relation of life."

He died from a brief illness of severe grippe followed by pneumonia.

note! The above article said that "eleven children were born of their marriage, but three of these died young, namely: Everett, John and Lena: and Elbert died in 1904." The 1900 Census shows John, Lena and Albert (Elbert) still alive.

    John Robert PARKER
The laborious existence of a progressive Iowa farmer, whose broad fields of grain stretch from his barns in every direction, was exchanged for the radically different yet no less busy life of a California sheep-raiser when in 1876 Mr. Parker removed to the western coast as a permanent settler. Prior to the removal his life had been marked by few changes, the first of any importance having been the migration of the family from Ohio to Iowa when he was a lad of thirteen years, and the second event of prominence occurring when he made a trip to Pike's Peak at the time of discovery of gold in Colorado. The latter journey interested him in the west, but the results from a moneyed standpoint were unsatisfactory and he cheerfully returned to agricultural efforts on the home farm.
John Robert Parker was born at Newark, Licking county, Ohio, November 9,1838, and at the age of thirteen in 1851 he accompanied his parents, Timothy and Catharine (Trout) Parker, from Ohio to Iowa, settling in Poweshiek county, where he aided his father in the clearing of a government claim. Later he took up land for a homestead and spent many years in making improvements, bringing the soil under cultivation and securing those returns to which the efforts of capable farmers entitle them. While he gave his attention almost wholly to agriculture, there was a time in young manhood when he taught school and he continued in that profession for a very short period after his marriage, thus earning the money he needed for defraying indebtedness on his land.
The establishment of a home on an Iowa farm'followed the union of Mr. Parker with Miss Sarah Dillon, a native of Ohio and a woman of forceful personality and attractive qualities. Eleven children were born of the marriage, but three of these died young, namely: Everett, John and Lena; and Elbert died in 1904. Those now living are as follows: Durward C., Eugene D., Freeman, Jennie K., Luella, Eva and Mary E. The first-named son, a resident of Esparto, married Minnie Gates and is the father of two daughters. Eugene D., of Capay, Yolo county, married Daisy Goodnow and has two children, Milo and Fern. Freeman, who lives at Esparto, is married and has two sons, Ervin and Everett. The first-named daughter, Jennie K., is the wife of Richard Chinn and the mother of four children, John, Lela, Erma and Blanche. Luella, Mrs. Hugh Chinn, has four children, Lowell, Amy, Nella and Stella. Eva married Jack Simpson, a dairyman living at Meridian, Sutler county; they are the parents of three children, Elmo, Elmer and Vernon R. Mary E., the last-named member of the Parker family, married Paschal Moore and they are living on a dairy ranch near Woodland; their family comprises three children, Marvyn, Leoma and Ola.
Shortly after his arrival in Yolo county and his taking up of land, Mr. Parker went back into the hills, where he bought about three thousand acres of range land. On this vast tract he herded a flock of three thousand head of sheep. The business proved profitable, although the net returns were largely reduces through the depredations of wildcats, wolves and coyotes. In those days wild animals were plentiful and hunting excursions were frequent in the vicinity of the Snow mountain, where frequently Mr. Parker aided in the killing of bears. On his large ranch near Esparto he planted eight acres in an orchard which forms a valuable adjunct to the place. At one time he owned an almond orchard of thirty acres in Hungry Hollow, but this he sold. Throughout the long period of his residence in Yolo county he gave
consistent aid to all movements for the general welfare and especially helped in the work of the Christian Church, whose doctrines he upheld by precept and theory. His interest in educational progress led him to consent to serve as a school trustee, but as a rule he declined all offices and took no part whatever in public affairs and politics aside from voting the Republican ticket. When death came to him, February 24, 1902, it removed from the county one of its pioneer sheep-raisers and worthy ranchers, a citizen of sterling, rugged characteristics, of pronounced strength of character and unquestioned integrity in every relation of life.

According to daughter in law, Ora Mae, Sarah was a cranky old lady. (probably due to the senility) One day she told Ora Mae, "You stole my slip." and proceeded to look through all of Ora's drawers. Sarah had it on the whole time. (this was told to me by Elinor Parker)

1887 Timothy and Kate celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1887 in Vacaville, CA.
    Newspaper article
"THE GOLDEN WEDDING: Saturday last these two patriarchs celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in Vacaville surrounded by their sons and their wives and children. There was present at the re-union in the forenoon the following: J.R. Parker, wife and two children; G.L. Parker, wife and daughter; O.E. Parker, wife and five children; H.L. Parker, wife and three children; Mrs. Martha Huchinson, SanJose; Richardson Chinn, wife and great-grand child; Mrs. A. McDonald of Winters and Eugene Harris, of Lake county, a grand son. This was an extra-ordinary number of decendants to be present and speaks well for the adhesion of the family.
In the evening a large number of their friends gathered at their residence to congratulate the old couple and to wish them many additional anniversaries. During the evening Elder Pattee read the following poem, written by Miss Sarah Higgins, Commemorative of the event, which we shall place under the caption: CATCHING A TROUT: To-night we're all assembled in this fair and happy land, in spite of many troubles, a bright and joyous band, to celebrate a great event that happened long ago, When the locks were bright with sunshine, that now are white with snow. Dear friends, if you will listen, I'll tell the wondrous tale of this couple walking hand-in-hand, through life's uncedrtain vale. Perhaps amongst the number, some few will warning take. And resolve the holy marriage vows their lips will never make. In fair Ohio's balm clime, land where good men die and Bucheye shoot its branches green toward an azure sky, There lived, full fifty years ago, a maiden young and fair, With liquid eyes so full and black and waves of raven hair. Kate Trout was the fair maiden's name of whom this tale I write, Her past had been a happy dream; her future seemed as bright. O;, many were the suitors who worshipped at her shrine and the number she rejected was somewhat akin to nine. As each hopeful one was treated to the mitten from her hand, Off in dark despair he wandered, sighing for a better land. But when her eighteenth year had come, and her heart was still her own, There came from grim New England's strand, a youth of high renown. Of noble parentage he came for I have his honest word, That his nephew's uncle's cousin's wife was the grandchild of a lord: And then you know, at Stony Point when Wayne cut such a figger, The man who gave the countersign was his own grandsire's nigger. But we'll dwell not on his ancestors, for some great author cries, In thunder tones, "Act well your part, there all the honor lies." Well, Parker was the noted name of this young gallant swain, A kind and tender heart had he, a wise untireing brain. Before the people there could think what Parker was about, He gave his mind to fishing, and soon he caught a "Trout!" And having caught this lovely Trout, as proud as proud could be, He gaily launched his bark upon the matrimonial see. Westward then they journeyed onward and their lives seemed bright and free, As the golden lines of sunset, dancing on the rippling sea, Parker was a loving husband and his heart was tried and true, But in one ungarded moment, things about him fairly flew. One evening as he crossed the threshold of his little cottage home, Pitying those who had no fire-sides, but throughout the world must roam, His head collided sharply with a saddle---woeful fate! And he pulled it down and threw it into the neighboring state! Onward still they journeyed westward Each year brought its griefs and cares, Each year brought its joys and sorrows, They were blessed with many children, One fair girl and seven boys; All were bright-eyed happy children, Life for whom was full of joys. Once again they journeyed westward, and beheld ere many days, California's glorious splendor, gilded with the sunset rays. Vacaville, this beautious city, then became their chosen home, And throughout the misty future never will they wish to roam. So, tonight we're all assembleld in fair Vaca's glorious clime, Halting but for one brief moment in the rushing stream of life. Round about us stand the children of this genial man and wife. All the air is thick with Parkers; You could cut them with a knife. Throughout the silent future while the tide of years shall bow, May the name of Parker ever be as pure and fair as now. May the hand of God be with them till the storm of life is past, and may it safely guide them through the pearly gates at last."]

This may or may not be the order of things; but would it not be more in keeping with the circumstances to say that Pompey's chief services on the occasion were in the fact of his having, by special agreement, procured the countersign for the Americans on the evening of the attack. (on stony point)…….We venture the opinion that Pompey did little effective service beyond giving the password for that night, and that on the discharge of the first gun, and that, too, on the outside of the first row abates, Pompey retired with accelerated speed. ….
If Pompey was the slave of Mr. Lamb, whose residence at that time stood on the high ground which formerly extended out as far as the locality of the present store of D. Tompkins & Sons, it would be natural to suppose that, in making his market visits to the British garrison, he would take the causeway leading directly from his "massa's" house to the foot of the hill, where the first abates cornered.

1893 -Obituary from "Woodland Daily Democrat"
Wed eve, 27 Sep 1893, died Suddenly
T.J. Parker expires of Neuralgia of the heart, in Vacaville.
"Oscar Parker returned from Vacaville Tuesday evening, where he went to attend the funeral of his father, who died suddenly at that place, at an early hour. last Sunday A.M.
Appears that the deceased had been complaining of a pain in the breast for 2 or 3 days. He did not regard it as a serious matter, and remonstrated when a physician was called. The physician examined him and pronounced his heart and lungs in good condition.
Mon eve, he went to bed as usual, and so far as his wife knows, slept during the night. In the A.M. he awoke and got out of bed about 5 o'clock. Mrs. Parker enquired why he was getting up so early, and he replied that he was tired, and thought he would get up and make a fire.
He partially robed himself in the bedroom, and retired to the sitting room and was setting on a sofa, and in the act of pulling on his stockings, when he fell over and expired immediately. The verdict was that he died of neuralgia of the heart.
Deceased was a native of NY, and 78yrs, 7 mos, 7 days old. He was well known and highly respected"

buried in Elmira Cemetary, Vacaville, California

Note: The Miles Parker listed on the grant deed with Timothy in Ohio in 1851 is in the
1850 Census Irondequoit, Monroe, New York. "Miles parker age 41 Laborer, born NY, Elizabeth age 38, born NY, Abigail J age 19 NY, Mary A 12 NY, Sarah M. 7 NY, Peter D. (Percy?) age 22 NY."
1860 Census London, Monroe, Michigan: "Miles Parker age 50 Farmer born NY, Elizabeth 46 NY, Mary 21 NY, Sarah 16 NY, Mariah 18 NY, Abigail 72 PA, Daniel Wright 8 WA, Samuel Agit 1 Mich"
1870 Census Vassar, Tuscola, Mich: "Miles Parker age 57 farmer NY, Elizabeth 53 NY, Sarah 27 NY, Mariah 17 NY, Charles 10 Mich"
Notice that the older Abigail in the 1860 Census is probably the same as the one in the 1850 census with Timothy Parker in the 1850 Ohio census.

    Notes:

I believe Catherine, who married Timothy Parker, was the daughter of Michael Trout, because John Westbrook was , made guardian of Michael's 3 daughters; Margaret, Helen and Catherine, in 1837. just before Catherine's marriage. John Westbrook lived next to Timothy in the 1840 Census in Licking County Ohio. Timothy Parker's mother was Abigail Westbrook. I believe John Westbrook to be related to her . Michael Trout was married to Sarah Baker. She later married John Westbrook as Sally Trout. Timothy and Catherine Parker moved to Powesheik County, Iowa. Catherine Trout's sister married Edward Griswald in 1841 in Powesheik County, Both of them and Sarah and John Westbrook are buried in Dresden Cemetery in Poweshiek County, Iowa.

"Yolo Weekly Mail", Friday, 15 Feb 1895, (Woodland newspaper, Yolo Co. archives): "Mrs T J Parker, mother of O E Parker, is dangerously ill at her home on Court St. She is suffering from heart trouble."

Obit from "Yolo Weekly Mail", Tues, Feb 26, 1895, pg 7: "Mrs. Catherine T. Parker died yesterday forenoon at the home of her son, Oscar E. Parker on Cort St. For the past five years the aged lady has been an invalid. Recently her health failed rapidly, and she could not survive an attack of lagrippe, with which she bravely struggled the past two weeks.
Deceased was a native of Ohio, and at the time of her death was aged 75 years, 1 mo, 11 days. She has been a resident of Yolo County for the past 25 years. A family of four sons who mourn her loss are: JR of Hungry Hollow, OE of Woodland, Hiram L of Kings Co, JM of Vacaville. The remains will be shipped to Vacaville, and the funeral held at that place at 10 am today."

Obit "Woodland Daily Democrat", 25 Feb 1895: "Death of a Good Woman, Mrs Catherine Parker passes away peacefully and Serenely. Mrs. Catherine Parker died at the residence of her son, O E Parker on Court street, at 11:30 am Sunday.
The immediatecause of her death was pneumonia, but she had been afflicted with paralysis for five years, and had been unable to walk for more than a year.
The deceased is native of Ohio and 75 years, 1 month and 10 days old. Her husband preceded her to the grave about a year ago, and he was buried in Vacaville,

after which they made their home in Yolo county.
She leaves four sons,m JR Parker, of Hungry Hollow, O E Parker of Woodland, H L Parker of Kings county, and J M Parker of Vacaville.
Mrs. Parker had been a devout member of the Christian church for more than fifty years. She was a woman of gentle and lovable disposition and exemplary character, and her death will be profoundly regretted by all who knew her. The body will be shipped to Vacaville on Tuesday for interment."

Katy died from Heart problems and Grippe.

The question was: whose father was the Catherine Trout who married Timothy Parker in 1837 in Licking County Ohio.

I believe Catherine Trout, who married Timothy Parker, was the daughter of Michael Trout and Sarah Baker. John Westbrook was made guardian of Michael's 3 daughters; Margaret, Helen and Catherine Trout, in 1837. just before Catherine's marriage to Timothy Parker on May 28, 1837.. Michael Trout died in 1822, and there is a marriage of a John Westbrook and Sally (a nickname for Sarah) Trout in Licking County, Ohio, 12 March 1825. I could not find John Westbrook in the Ohio 1820 census. He might have been living with his parents. I could not find Michael Trout in the 1810 Census in Licking County Ohio but found a Henry Trout, ( Henry is thought to be Michael’s father), in the neighboring county, Fairfield, in the 1806 tax list.
John Westbrook lived next to Timothy in the 1840 Census in Licking County Ohio. He had 2 males under 5, 1 male 40-50, 1 male 60-70, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 15-20, 1 female 30-40. Timothy Parker and John Westbrook were also neighbors in the 1850 Census in Licking County, Ohio and Timothy’s mother, Abigail, is living with him. Abigail’s maiden name was Westbrook. In the 1850 Census there is an Ephraim and Sarah Baker living next door to Timothy and Catherine Parker. It is possible that he is Sarah Baker,/Trout/Westbrook’s brother. Ephraim is 51 and Sarah Westbrook is 49. Although the marriage record states John Westbrook married Sally, In the 1850 through 1870 Censuses, John Westbrook’s wife is listed as Sarah. In the 1960 Census both the Timothy Parker family and the John Westbrook families have moved to Iowa within 30 miles or so of each other. Timothy in Poweshiek County and John in neighboring Iowa County. Before 1870 Timothy had moved tp California and John remained in Iowa. He and Sarah were buried in Poweshiek County. I also believe it was Catherine Trout’s, sister, Helen, who married Edward Griswold in Licking County, Ohioon Sep 27, 1841 and are listed in the 1856 Iowa Census in Poweshiek County. Both Edward and Helen Griswold are buried in the same cemetery as John and Sarah Westbrook. Timothy Parker's mother was Abigail Westbrook. I believe John Westbrook to be her brother. I have not proved this information. However, I believe with all of this related documentation, that the Catherine Trout who married Timothy Parker and the Helen Trout who married Edward Griswold are the daughters of Michael and Sarah Baker Trout . I have not found Margaret Trout’s marriage yet.

    The Official Beginning
The Town of Greece was incorporated in 1822. It was named after the country of Greece as a show of support for the Greek people who fought for their independence from Turkish rule. The name is also a tribute to this old-world nation – a symbol of intellectual and athletic excellence.

The Town of Greece was formed from the northern part of the town of Gates. In 1823, expansion of the Erie Canal resulted in the development of the southern part of town. Mason workers came from Europe to help build the canal and often settled here. Many of them built cobblestone houses, some of which still stand today.

Throughout the 1800s, the local economy centered on agriculture. Many of the beautiful farmhouses that were built during this period have been converted for commercial use. The Upton-Paine house, now Ridgemont Country Club, is one such home. The Greece Historical Society currently occupies the charming Larkin-Beattie-Howe house built in the 1850’s. (Gordon Howe, former Greece Supervisor, raised his family there.)

The probate records of Licking County: pg 90 - 24 May 1837-show Michael Trout, deceased. His heirs: Catherine, Helen, Margaret. Guardian John Westbrook

    Possible ancestor:
    http://www.familytreedna.com/public/TROUT_DNA_Research_Project/default.aspx#lines
Line #1. _____ Johann Wendel Georg TRAUT (1689-1760) of Paradise Twp, near Strasburg, Lancaster, PA arrived Philadelphia 5 Sep 1738 on the ship "Winter Galley" from Kleinfischlingen, Südliche Weinstraße (near the free city of Landau), Electoral Palatinate, Holy Roman Empire (Strassberger - List #52; PTA-E.1). This is a very well-researched line that is perhaps best documented by Geo. E. Trout, 250 Year History Trout Family (Closson Press, Apollo, PA, 1991). Numerous bio-sketches of descendants in this line have been published in various local county histories. DNA Reference Line: Y-DNA Testing by well-documented descendants, Jerre Penn Trout 3rd and David Henry Trout, has resulted in double-validation of the Y-DNA Reference Line (signature Haplotype) for Line #1, and their 37-marker test results are posted below in turquoise-colored Match Cluster-B. Y-DNA testing has also now predicted Line #1 as being Haplogroup “R1b1b2.”; Accordingly, all (21) members of turquoise-colored Match Cluster-B in our study are now proven to be in some way directly related to Johann Wendel Georg TRAUT (1689-1760) of near Strasburg, Lancaster, PA.

In reply to: Re: Brethren Trout Line--early 1700s Trouts
    6/08/01
You mentioned that your earliest known Trout ancestor was Michael Trout, born circa 1779 in Westmoreland Co, PA.You thought he might be Irish. In my opinion, it would be more likely that your Trouts were German.Trout derives from Traut, and they were from Germany.

To my knowledge, there were only one batch of Trouts in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania at or around the time you state your Michael Trout was born there. All of these Trouts stem from Johann Wendel George Traut (1689-1760), who married Appolonia Steinlin. They immigrated to America from Germany on 5 Sep 1738.One of their sons was named Michael Trout (1730-1780).

Michael Trout married Elizabeth Berger (1735-1775).I would guess that this Michael was the grandfather of your Michael Trout.Michael and Elizabeth Trout initially lived in the Strasburg Township of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They moved to the Bart Township of Lancaster Co, PA by at least 1756.Four of their sons subsequently moved to Westmoreland County, PA.I would assume that one of these men was the father of your Michael. A couple of them did have sons by the name of Michael, although none fit your 1779 date.Maybe there really was no "Michael" born in 1779 but the prominence of the grandfather's name somehow got mixed into the family history.I don't have any record of if any of the descendants went to Cambria Co, PA.

At any rate, their first son to go to Westmoreland County was Henry Michael Trout. He was born on 12 February 1757 in the Bart Township of Lancaster County, PA; he died in 1812.Henry served as an Ensign in the Revolutionary Army, and as a result, he received some land in Westmoreland Co, PA.He eloped with his new bride, Catharine Bossart (b. 17 Sep 1765; daughter of John and Catherine Bossart of the Hamilton Township near Chambersburg, PA), in June of 1782.They moved to the East Huntington Township of Westmoreland Co, PA.They had 12 children there, one of whom was named Michael Trout (1788-1822); he married Sarah Baker in 1819.Could this be your Michael?

Michael and Elizabeth's fourth son, George Trout, also moved to Westmoreland County.George was also born in the Bart Twp of Lancaster Co, PA in 1762; he died in 1829 in Perry Co, OH.He married Margaret Ziegler (b. 1771) in 1788, and at about that time, they moved to the South Huntington Twp of Westmoreland Co, PA.By 1812, they had moved to Perry Co, OH.However, before that time, they, too, had a son named Michael, who was born in 1809.However, this seems too late to be your Michael; furthermore, he moved to Ohio.

Another son named Philip, also born in the Bart Twp on 4 Apr 1765, moved to the Mount Pleasant Twp of Westmoreland Co, PA with his wife, Susanna Schroeder around 1788.They, too, had a son who they named Michael. He was born in 1803.Again, this was probably too late to be your Michael.

Finally, Michael and Elizabeth's last son to move to Westmoreland County was named Jacob. He was born on 3 Sept 1772 and moved to Westmoreland County some time after 1780.

All these sons had children. If your Trouts can be traced to Westmoreland County near about 1780, then my guess would be that they are somehow related to the aforementioned children or grandchildren of Michael and Elizabeth (Berger) Trout.

    Good luck!

    Sincerely,
    N. Trout

Michael married Sarah or Sally Baker on 4 Feb 1819 in , Licking, Ohio, United States. Sarah was born about 1802 in Pennsylvania, United States; died on 13 Apr 1878 in Deep River, Poweshiek, Iowa, United States; was buried in Dresden Cemetary. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
