!NOTE: From the "History of Hennipen Co., Minnesota" by William Fletcher.
William Wesley Sly was born 9 July 1848 in Oakland County, Michigan. At the age of 16 he went to sea and before he was 21 years of age, he circumnavigated the globe. He lived in England two years and engaged in painting for which he had a natural ability. From there he went to Italy, Asia, East India, China and was in Abyssinian expedition with supplies, was at Ensley Bay at the time King Theodore suicided. In 1869 he returned to Bomban, and there went on board the Great Eastern, laying cable. He served in the late war and after peace was declared, he went again to sea. In 1872 he engaged in the paint business in Detroit and remained there until 1878. (With the exception of one schooner trip to Duluth, in which he was shipwrecked and nearly lost his life.) In 1878 he came to Minneapolis and took charge of the Minnesota Linseed Oil Company and paint works. In 1889 he formed a partnership with L.J. Skiinner, known as the Minneapolis Liquid Paint Company. He married in June 1880, Mary-daughter of Rev. L.D. Brown of St. Paul.

(This is a letter from William W. Sly, born 1848, to his son George L. Sly)
PANAMA RAILROAD COMPANY July 26,1909 Geo. L. Sly Bristol, England
Son George, Your last came to hand in due time. Glad to hear from you and to know that you are well and that your mother is better. So I am still here doing nothing. Things look pretty blue for me here. Am still looking for something no matter what it is so long as I can make a living and save a little and when I do get a little ahead, will leave this country for sure as it is no good at all anymore. I do not know where I will head for as yet but am on the lookout for someplace. It is all guesswork to know the best place. I suppose that you will be going back to Africa again soon or if not, where to? Keep me posted where you are as we can write one another sometime so long as we can buy stamps.

The canal is going on all the time and will be finished in 1915 sure then you will see the greatest waterway in the world. It sure is a big job of work but will go through all right. The railroad is one of the best on earth and does more business than any railroad on earth for its length, only 48 miles long from Panama to Colon Coast. Two dollars and forty five cents.....first class and no baggage. For it you must pay three cents per pound on all baggage except your suitcase and things like that. Each day four trains come to Panama and on Sundays six trains, two hospital cars bring in the sick and wounded to the Ancon which is the largest hospital in the world, consisting of something like 26 buildings, all separate and each one from fifty to eighty feet on the ground floor and many of them are two story high. The largest part of the sick are negros. Yes, seven eights of the sick are blacks but all have white American nurses and have just the same treatments as the whites. There is wards for Americans, English, Germans, French, Italians, Spanish, Negroes and Greeks. So you see we have a mixed population down here in this country. No more for this time. Remember me to all your family, your wife and baby. Yours W.W. Sly Ancon P. O.

William Sly and Elizabeth Morris were married 17 July 1842 in Commerce, Oakland County, Michigan. William had been married previously to Ashah Davis, and they had 2 children, Anna and Rhoda. William and Elizabeth had 1 child, William when living in Hamburg, Michigan in 1850. By 1860 they lived in Oneida, Michigan and had 4 more boys, Lester, Alvanus, Daniel, and George. They also had a daughter, Hattie, who is not listed in the census but is listed as age 5 in 1863 Isabella County Probate Records for William Sly: "The petition of Elizabeth BROWN widow of William Sly, late of said county (Isabella), deceased, respectfully showeth that on or about the first day of Jan. 1863, The said William Sly died leaving goods and clothing, rights, credits, and real estate in the county, aforesaid, and that to the best of the knowledge and belief of your petitioner no last will and testament was left by the said William Sly, deceased. William Wesley Sly was born 22 October 1807 in New York. He was the1st of 7 children born to Christopher Sly and Lodemia Mack. His mother died in 1823 when William was just short of 16 years of age. They were then living in Hopewell, New York near Palmyra.

This story was told by a grand daughter in law of William: " The Indians around Walled Lake (Michigan) called William Sly the `strong man' because every time the Indians went through Walled Lake, they had to shake hands all around. He got so tired of shaking hands that he started to squeeze their hands real tight so that it would hurt and they wouldn't ask to shake hands anymore. Hence he earned the name `the strong man'. William was a big, powerful man. He was a blacksmith, thus his strength. He died 11 Jan 1863 in Commerce, Oakland County, Michigan, at the age of 66.

Elizabeth Morris was born about 1820 in Ireland. She was the last of 6 children of William Morris and Jane Crawford. She immigrated to America with her parents and 2 sisters in 1830 possibly from Antrim, Ireland. A sister and 2 brothers had preceded them that year. About 1835 the family moved to Oakland County, Michigan. In January 1863 Elizabeth's husband died and in August of the same year she lost her 2 brothers, becoming their heir. The next year 4 October 1864 at Detroit, Michigan Elizabeth Sly married Sylvester C. Brown. They were both of Royal Oak, Michigan. He was 39 and she was 33.
The children were all in Isabella County in 1865. Sylvester Brown and wife, Rosannah, took care of Hattie, Daniel, and George. Mr. Brown submitted a bill for food and clothing 7 June 1869. (Could this be the parents of Elizabeth Sly's 2nd Husband, Sylvester C Brown?)
Elizabeth died about 1879 in Michigan.

Hello Recently I received from the archives at Canandaigua the probate records of Zebulon Mack. They are quite interesting and were administered by Jonathan Mack. They list his (Zeb's)brother Gurdon Mack 1/4 part of land he gave to Jonathan his son,Zeb's brother Benjamin deceased, his children William,Ben Jr. and Sally each recieve 1/6 of 1/4 part,Zeb's sister Hannah Austin,1/4 part. Also listed for 1/6 part are Marvin Van Orman and John Van Orman I think are children of John T. and Nellie Mack Van Orman.Later in 1841 there is a settlement with my grgr grandmother Sarah Munson Davis her brothers Gorham and Renselear Munson, the two daughters of Asahel Mack deceased son of Zeb, Nellie and Louisa then Dencey and James Riley Van Norman .I have another deed ordered that will I hope have a parent for the Munsons. I also copied the pension applications for Zeb and Gurdon Mack and Gurdon gives his birth in 1757.Thanks JoAnn
