    20. Waitstill CRUMB ( Joseph , William , Daniel ) was born 6 Jul 1742 in Westerly, Kings Co., Rhode Island. He died 21 Apr 1809 in Unadilla Forks, Otsego Co., New York and was buried in Unadilla Forks Cemetery, Unadilla, Otsego Co., New York.

THE CRUMB GENEALOGY, DESCENDANTS OF DANIEL CRUMB, of Westerly, Rhode Island, compiled by Clara Crumb Fisk, Sarasota Florida (1956), found in the DAR Library, Washington DC, page 22. 12. Waitstill-4 Crumb (Jos.-3, Wm.-2, Dan.-1) of Westerly, RI, Stonington, Conn., Stephentown, NY, Plainfield, Otsego Co., NY and Unadilla Forks, NY, son of Joseph and Amey (Cottrell) Crumb, was born July 6, 1742 in Westerly; died in Unadilla Forks April 21. 1809. He married in Westerly, Patience Wells, born Sept. 30, 1739 (Stonington Rec.); died Jan. 4, 1816, age 73 years. Gravestone Rec.) daughter of John-4, (John-3, Thos.-2, Nathaniel-1) and Amy (Wilcox) Wells. Wait and Patience were buried on the farm, and later moved to Unadilla Forks. Probably dates on stone were not plain.
The name, Waitstill, is very historical; -- Still was the name of one of the maternal ancestors of the Winthrops in England, at Groton Manor, and Wait was another. The middle name was often omitted in the signature in the early days. The Waitstill Winthrop, son of the Governor, in a mantter of record at New London, Conn., April 16, 1713, is styled, Major General Wait Still Winthrop. Later the name became Waitstill.
In 1760, Wait's name was on the Westerly tax list. In 1764 he was at a Council meeting in Westerly. From 1767 to 1774, he was living in Stonington, where his first three children were born. On Jan. 3, 1709 he and Patience sold land in Westerly to John Cottrell. May 26, 1769 he registered the ear mark of his livestock in Stonington.
In 1774, Feb. 1, an order was given to attach land and goods of Wait Crumb of Stonington, and keep him in safety to appear before Nathaniel Minor. The note was dated Nov. 3, 1773, and was a promise to pay Benjamin Worden 3 pounds, 10 shillings. (Stonington Court Rec., in Hartford State Library).
Some time between 1774 and 1778 he moved to Renesselaer Co., NY. An old map of that portion of the Manor of Renesselaer lying east of the Hudson River, shows the names of persons to whom many of the earlier lots were conveyed -- "commencing at the S.W. corner of the Town, & N. along the Western border, then eastward through the North & Central portions of the Town, appears the lots of W. Crumb, D. Crumb, William Crumb, and others" (Hist. of Rens. Co., NY, p. 494).
In Sept. 1783 Wait, with other RI people, established at what was then "Little Hoosie", now Stephentown, in Rens. Co., NY, the first Free Will Baptist Church in New York State. Besides Wait and Patience Crumb, Amy Crumb, David & Wife Hannah Crumb and William Crumb were members of this church.
From Stephentown, Wait moved to Plainfield, Otsego Co., NY, and finally settled on a farm near Unadilla Forks, located on a high eminence, still known as Crumb Hill.
The first Free Will Baptist Church of Unadilla Forks was established in 1892, and Wait and wife were charter members, and Wait the first deacon. The church edifice built in 1832, had a memorial window to Wait in the vestibule. The building burned in 1895, but the window was saved and is in the vestibule of the present church, which also has a tablet to his honor.
Wait and Patience were buried in Unadilla Forks Cemetery.
Wait was less than 18 years of age when Rhode Island was required to raise her quota for an expedition against Montreal. In Feb. 1700 the Colony voted to raise 1000 men for the expedition; but there was not much spirit except for privateering, which was profitable, through arduous and dangerous. Wait joined this expedition and stayed with the Army to the end.
Christopher Harris was Colonel and Giles Russell, Captain of the Company which included Wait. They proceeded to Albany and joined forces with Lord Amherst. Many soldiers deserted on the way to Albany. Forces converged on Montreal from three directions: (1) Amherst advanced with his main force through Otsego, across Ontario and down the St. Lawrence; (2) Murray came up the river from Quebec, which had been captured the preceding autumn. Haviland, with many colonials, including the RI contingent, marched from Albany in a north easterly direction to Fort Crown Point near the southern end on Lake Champlain and the Richlieu River far on their way to Montreal. This objective was surrounded by the French Sept. 8, 1760, and immediately many of the American soldiers "Demoboilized themselves" and returned ("R.I. in the Colonial Wars," by Howard M. Chapin).
In January 1762, the King of England declared war upon Spain. Each Colony was asked for an additional levy of troops, and RI's quota was 666 men. Capt. Giles Russell again commanded a company which contained Wait Crumb, and many others who were Westerly names. The first detachment (187 or 210) men, accounts differ, was hurried to New York in May and shipped to Cuba (Chapin, p. 15).
In March 1762, Admiral Sir George Pocock and Earl of Albermarle set out from Portsmouth, England, with a large strong fleet and 10,000 troops. . .
On page 56, volume 14 of the New England Register, is found a copy of an original paper entitled: "The names of the Officers and Soldiers that went to Havana under Capt. Russell." The list comprised sixty-three names, including "Giles Russell, Capt." "Hezekiah Saunders, Lt." and "Waite Crumb" Twenty-seven men died between Aug. 21 and Nov. 26, 1762, and two more "Died since came home" The deaths previous to Aug. 21 are not given. In Rhode Island State Records at Providence is Wait's Military Record: -- Waite Crumb served in the French and Indian Wars: in Capt. Russell's Co., in 176; also in Capt. Russell's Co. at Havana in 1762 (List of RI Soldiers and Sailors in old French and Indian Wars, 1755, 1762, compiled by Howard Chapin, p. 58. Gen. Dict. of New Eng., Vol. 14, p. 56).

Waitstill married Patience WELLS, daughter of John WELLS and Amy WILCOX, in Westerly, Kings Co., Rhode Island. Patience was born 30 Sep 1739 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. She died 4 Jan 1816 in Unadilla Forks, Otsego Co., New York and was buried in Unadilla Forks Cemetery, Unadilla, Otsego Co., New York.

THE CRUMB GENEALOGY, DESCENDANTS OF DANIEL CRUMB, of Westerly, Rhode Island, compiled by Clara Crumb Fisk, Sarasota Florida (1956), found in the DAR Library, Washington DC, page 22. 12. Waitstill-4 Crumb . . . married in Westerly, Patience Wells, born Sept.
In Sept. 1783 Wait, with other RI people, established at what was then "Little Hoosie", now Stephentwon, in Rens. Co., NY, the first Free Will Baptist Church in New York State.
